How Many Days in Shanghai? 2, 3 and 4-Day Itineraries
Three full days is Shanghai’s first-visit sweet spot. Group Puxi and Pudong instead of crossing the Huangpu repeatedly.
Three full days is the best first Shanghai trip. Two days covers the Bund, one Puxi neighbourhood day and a single Pudong view, but it leaves no recovery time for rain or jet lag. Four days lets you add a museum, a deeper neighbourhood walk or a Yangtze Delta day trip without turning Shanghai into a railway waiting room. Do not count Suzhou as “a Shanghai day”: it is a separate excursion and deserves its own calendar block.
The city becomes easier when you stop crossing the Huangpu River repeatedly. Group the Bund, People’s Square and the former French Concession on the Puxi side. Put Lujiazui and a Pudong waterfront walk together. Cross once for a deliberate reason, ideally by ferry in operating hours, not three times because a list ranked attractions independently.
Count an arrival day only when you reach the hotel before lunch. PVG immigration, baggage and the ride into town can turn an early-afternoon landing into dinner. If your fourth day is Suzhou or Hangzhou, call it a day trip and protect the evening before it; an early train after a late Bund night is an avoidable mistake.

Build from four blocks
A — Old and commercial Puxi: People’s Square → East Nanjing Road → Bund, with the waterfront after dark.
B — West-side neighbourhoods: Jing’an, Zhangyuan, Wukang Road and a selected French Concession/Xuhui walk. Do not chase every viral lane.
C — Pudong: Lujiazui, one observation deck if visibility is good, then riverside. Cross by metro or ferry once.
D — Choice day: Shanghai Museum East, West Bund, a rain-proof cultural day, or Suzhou/Hangzhou.
Two days: combine A with a short evening in Pudong, then B. Three days: A + B + C. Four days: add D. In rain, move the museum block forward and save skyline tickets until visibility improves.
