Shanghai to Hangzhou Day Trip: Train, West Lake and a Realistic Route
Choose West Lake or Lingyin as the day’s anchor and count the transfer from Hangzhou East before deciding that one day is enough.
Hangzhou is possible in a day, but only if you choose either West Lake or Lingyin as the anchor. A 45–60 minute train does not put you beside the lake: most fast services arrive at Hangzhou East (杭州东站), followed by another urban transfer. Hangzhou Station (杭州站/城站) is closer to West Lake when a suitable train exists. Do not plan a full lake circuit, Lingyin Temple and a late train as if they were adjacent.
West Lake is a landscape, not a single pin. Pick one shore and one causeway, then use a boat, bus or taxi to avoid spending the day completing a perimeter. Weekends, blossom season and public holidays slow the scenic roads. Lingyin adds a westward transfer and its own entrance sequence, so it belongs first in the day or on an overnight trip.
Carry the passport used for 12306 and protect the return with a 90-minute station margin. If rain is light, the lake still works; if visibility and wind are poor, do not force a boat merely because it was in the plan.

The reliable route is Hangzhou East → metro/taxi to the Broken Bridge/Bai Causeway side → walk Bai Causeway and the north lake → boat or bus for one further section → dinner → station. If Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺) is the priority, go there first by taxi or bus, then return to only one West Lake shore. Traffic around the scenic area can make the return slow.
Book the return, but do not make the last practical train your only option. Leave the lake with 90 minutes for Hangzhou East, more at peak traffic. Stay overnight if you want Lingyin, a substantial lake walk and evening atmosphere without clock-watching.
