Where to Stay in Shanghai: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors
Choose Jing’an, Xuhui, People’s Square, the Bund, Lujiazui or Hongqiao according to walking, airport and railway direction.
Stay in Jing’an or around People’s Square on a first visit. Both keep you on the Puxi side for neighbourhood walks while giving direct metro access toward the Bund, Lujiazui and Hongqiao. Choose Xuhui/Former French Concession for street life and evenings, the Bund for a view you will pay for, Lujiazui for business and towers, and Hongqiao only when airport or railway convenience is the actual purpose.
Shanghai hotel labels are elastic. “French Concession,” “Bund area” and “People’s Square” can describe properties well outside an easy walk. Map the door-to-metro route and the river side before paying. A view room may face the skyline without being beside a useful crossing; a Hongqiao hotel may be near the district but not walkable to the terminals. For a two-night stay, transport simplicity matters more than neighbourhood nuance. For four nights, atmosphere earns more weight.
If you land late at PVG, central Shanghai is still usually better than an airport hotel unless the next morning departs again. One long arrival transfer costs less time than relocating after breakfast.

PVG convenience is not truly “good” in any central neighbourhood; Line 2 and taxis simply make some routes workable. SHA strongly favours the west. Rail travellers should distinguish Hongqiao Station from Shanghai Station before choosing.
China Travel Pulse’s judgement: Jing’an is the best compromise, but People’s Square wins for two nights and Hongqiao wins for a one-night air–rail transfer. Area names never replace checking the actual metro walk.
