Shanghai Railway Stations Explained for Foreign Travelers
Understand Hongqiao, Shanghai, South and West stations, with airport transfers and a practical first-trip arrival buffer.
Shanghai Hongqiao (上海虹桥站) is the default high-speed hub for Beijing, Hangzhou and many Suzhou/Nanjing services, and it is physically integrated with Hongqiao Airport T2. Shanghai Station (上海站) is the convenient central alternative and also handles conventional services. Shanghai South (上海南站) matters for selected conventional and overnight routes; Shanghai West (上海西站) handles a smaller set of services. The same destination can appear from more than one station, so the correct answer is always the exact station on your 12306 booking.
For a first trip, arrive 60 minutes early, or 75–90 during public holidays and with children, large luggage or unresolved passport verification. China Railway requires the original ID used for purchase and security-checks passengers and bags.
Do not ask a driver for “Shanghai train station.” Show 上海虹桥站, 上海站, 上海南站 or 上海西站 exactly. Hongqiao is especially large: reaching the transport hub is not the same as reaching the departure level and your check-in gate. A train that saves ten minutes but requires an extra hour across the city is not the faster choice.
Quick Decision
| Best for | Matching Shanghai accommodation and airports to a train |
| Time needed | 45–90 minutes from central Shanghai plus buffer |
| Booking pressure | Usually 15-day sales window; high on holidays |
| Main risk | Confusing Shanghai, Shanghai South and Hongqiao |
| Recommended choice | Prefer the best train time, then verify its station |
| Last verified | 13 September 2026 |
| Station | Metro | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| 上海虹桥站 Hongqiao | 2, 10, 17 | Beijing and most Yangtze Delta high-speed choices |
| 上海站 Shanghai | 1, 3, 4 | Central hotel access; selected Suzhou/Nanjing and conventional trains |
| 上海南站 Shanghai South | 1, 3, 15 | Southern/overnight and conventional services |
| 上海西站 Shanghai West | 11, 15 | Limited services; useful only when ticket says so |
From PVG to Hongqiao, use the Airport Link when its hours fit. Do not book a train less than four hours after an international arrival; five is safer on separate tickets. From SHA T2, Hongqiao Station is the natural rail connection, but still allow terminal walking, security and boarding time.
China Travel Pulse’s judgement: for Suzhou and Hangzhou, do not insist on Hongqiao if Shanghai Station offers a good departure closer to your hotel. Door-to-door time beats train speed.
