How Many Days in Xi’an? A Realistic 2 and 3-Day Itinerary
Separate the walled city from the Qin heritage zone, then add the history museum only when a third day makes the trip slower.
Two full days is enough for Xi’an’s essential split: one day in the walled city, one day in the Qin heritage zone. Three days is better if the Shaanxi History Museum matters or you want the City Wall at sunset without squeezing it between arrivals. The Terracotta Army is not literally an all-day attraction, but it is a full travel block: allow six to eight hours for transport, security, the three pits and the optional Lishan Garden.
Do not count a late arrival as a city day. Xi’an North and the airport are outside the old-city core, and checking in with luggage can consume the useful afternoon. The walled city is compact by Chinese-city standards, but the Terracotta Army sits east in Lintong and the main history museum has a scarce reservation. Those three facts should shape the schedule.
If you have only two days, keep the Wall and Muslim Quarter on the city day and skip the museum. If you have three, the museum finally gets attention rather than becoming a one-hour queue between unrelated stops.

Day 1: Bell Tower area → Muslim Quarter lanes for lunch, not just the main snack street → South Gate → City Wall toward sunset.
Day 2: Terracotta Army. Add Lishan Garden only if attention and time remain. Eat in central Xi’an after returning.
Day 3: Shaanxi History Museum → Big Wild Goose Pagoda area → an unhurried evening. The museum and Terracotta Army overlap in dynastic context, not in experience; one is object-rich history, the other an archaeological site.
