240-Hour Transit Itineraries from Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu
Southern and western transit plans that keep one gateway, one verified permitted region and one protected departure day instead of forcing a cross-country loop.
Southern and western China offer excellent transit routes, but the map is deceptive. Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangxi and Yunnan may all appear in the national 240-hour framework, yet a traveler cannot assume that every participating place can be combined in one stay.
Start with the NIA's current 240-hour transit page and the August 2026 update. Confirm the exact port and permitted area before choosing a route below.
Pick one regional story
| Gateway | Best focus | Good stay length | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guangzhou | Food, heritage and Pearl River Delta cities | 4–6 nights | Assuming every Guangdong crossing participates |
| Shenzhen | Contemporary city plus a verified Guangdong route | 3–5 nights | Treating Hong Kong as a casual domestic transfer |
| Chengdu | Food, parks, pandas and one Sichuan side trip | 5–7 nights | Adding distant mountains or another province |
| Chongqing | Urban landscape and Yangtze-region experiences | 4–6 nights | Overloading steep, transit-heavy days |
Guangzhou and Shenzhen: a southern route
Four-night Guangzhou base
- Arrival: hotel near a useful metro line; light evening.
- Day 2: historic Guangzhou, markets and Cantonese food.
- Day 3: modern riverside districts and museums.
- Day 4: one verified nearby city or a flexible Guangzhou day.
- Departure: leave with a large margin.
This plan minimizes border and hotel complexity. If Shenzhen is the priority, use it as the base instead of commuting repeatedly.
Hong Kong or Macao as the onward region
Hong Kong and Macao can form the “C” in A → Mainland China → C, but the precise port is decisive. An international flight to Hong Kong, a cross-border high-speed train and a ferry do not share identical procedures.
For high-speed rail, review the operator information from MTR High Speed Rail and the Mainland port list. Carry the confirmed onward segment and allow time for exit formalities.
Do not take a casual side trip to Hong Kong and then re-enter Mainland China under the same assumed permission. That creates a new border event requiring its own entry basis.
Chengdu: a slower western route
Five-night Chengdu base
- Arrival day: settle in and stay near the city.
- Day 2: an early panda-base visit, then a quiet afternoon.
- Day 3: old neighborhoods, parks and tea culture.
- Day 4: one verified regional day trip.
- Day 5: flexible weather or food day; pack early.
- Departure day: direct movement to the airport or approved port.

Chengdu plus Chongqing?
The rail connection is fast, but immigration permission is not measured by train speed. Verify whether the two-city combination falls within the permitted area for your specific arrival port and policy. If it does, give Chongqing at least two nights and return to the departure city a day early.
Do not build one giant southwest loop
Chengdu → Chongqing → Kunming → Guilin may be an appealing vacation, but it is a poor default for a time-limited transit stay. Even if individual regions participate, the cross-region combination may not be permitted. It also consumes most of the trip in transfers.
Choose one gateway and one coherent region. Save the larger loop for a trip covered by a visa or nationwide exemption.
Booking order
- Prove A → China → different C.
- Verify passport, ports and permitted area.
- Confirm the onward seat.
- Choose one city as the final-night base.
- Check rail tickets on China Railway 12306.
- Reserve the panda base or other capacity-controlled attractions.
- Add flexible food and neighborhood days.
Common questions
Can I arrive in Guangzhou and leave by train for Hong Kong?
It may be possible through designated ports, but verify the exact rail port, ticket and permitted-area conditions. “Guangzhou to Hong Kong” is not enough detail.
Can I visit Yunnan from Chengdu?
Do not assume so. Check the allowed area associated with your entry route. A separate participating region is not automatically connected permission.
Which city is better for a first visit?
Guangzhou suits travelers focused on Cantonese food and southern urban culture. Chengdu suits a slower stay built around food, parks and pandas. Choose based on the onward route first.
Choose the final-night base first
Work backward from the confirmed onward departure. In the Pearl River Delta, border crossings and airport changes can add uncertainty. In Sichuan, a scenic-area road transfer can be vulnerable to weather. Book the final night near the departure city, then fit the regional side trip into the remaining middle days.
Use the complete 240-hour guide for the legal framework and the route checklist for ticket-level verification. If the intended route crosses several regions, compare a visa or nationwide exemption in China visa-free entry explained.
Bottom line
For a robust 240-hour itinerary, keep southern China southern and western China western. One gateway, one permitted region and one protected departure day will outperform an ambitious map that the policy does not support.
