240-Hour Transit Itinerary from Shanghai
Three-, five- and eight-night Shanghai transit routes with Yangtze Delta options, airport planning, booking order and a safe departure buffer.
Shanghai is one of the easiest places to turn a qualifying transit into a real trip. It has two major airports, strong rail links and access to nearby Jiangsu and Zhejiang destinations—but only when the exact entry route and permitted area have been verified.

Pass the immigration test first
Confirm:
- eligible ordinary passport;
- country/region A → China → different country/region C;
- confirmed onward ticket within the official clock;
- designated arrival and departure ports;
- every destination inside the permitted area;
- a short-stay purpose within scope.
Only then choose one of these itineraries.
Three route shapes

Do not add Beijing just because a fast train exists. The distance, permitted-area question and return risk make it a weak default inside a 240-hour Shanghai stay.
Three nights: essential Shanghai
Arrival day
Reach the hotel, save its Chinese address and walk locally. Avoid a fixed evening reservation after an international arrival.
Day 2
Choose one historic-neighborhood route, one museum or cultural anchor and the Bund after dark. The day should work even if jet lag reduces your pace.
Day 3
Explore a contrasting area—contemporary Pudong, former concession streets or a food-focused neighborhood. Confirm the onward flight and pack before the final evening.
Departure day
Travel directly to the correct airport or designated port with a large buffer.
Five nights: add Suzhou
Suzhou works as a day trip, but one overnight gives access to gardens before peak crowds and canals after the commuter return. Use our Suzhou international visitor guide to choose between the two.
Check the station carefully: Suzhou and Shanghai each have multiple rail terminals. Search current schedules and passenger rules on China Railway 12306, and return to Shanghai the day before an international departure.
Seven or eight nights: a Yangtze Delta triangle
Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou can create a strong route when the official permitted-area table supports the exact ports and destinations. Limit the trip to three hotels at most and put the final two nights in the departure city.
A comfortable pattern is:
- three nights Shanghai;
- two nights Suzhou;
- two nights Hangzhou;
- final night Shanghai if needed for the flight.
If weather or tickets fail, remove one stop rather than compressing every city.
PVG versus SHA
Pudong (PVG) handles most long-haul international services and sits far from central neighborhoods. Hongqiao (SHA) is integrated with a major railway hub and is closer to much of the city. Confirm both the airport code and terminal.
An arrival at one and departure from another may be operationally useful, but check that both are designated for the policy and do not underestimate the transfer.
Reservations and backups
Shanghai rewards flexible exploration, so reserve only what genuinely sells out. Put passport-linked tickets, intercity rail and the onward international segment first. Keep neighborhoods, parks and river walks as weather-proof substitutes.
If a wider itinerary includes Beijing under another lawful entry basis, use the Palace Museum's official booking site rather than an unofficial seller. It is not a reason to force Beijing into this transit route.

- Landing at PVG and booking a tight departure from SHA
- Treating a same-country return as transit
- Adding a city outside the permitted area
- Sleeping outside Shanghai on the final night

More than the airline's minimum. Include the city-to-airport journey, immigration formalities and a disruption buffer well inside the 240-hour limit.
A practical cost-control rule
Pay first for the onward ticket that supports immigration and the hotel that protects the final departure. Keep secondary-city hotels refundable until rail tickets are confirmed. Shanghai has enough flexible neighborhoods and museums that a canceled day trip need not become an expensive emergency.
