China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy can allow an eligible traveler to enter through a designated port, stay within the linked permitted area and depart for a third country or region without obtaining a visa in advance. It is powerful, but narrow: a valid passport alone is never enough.
As of 9 September 2026, the official framework covers 57 countries, 65 ports and permitted areas in 24 provincial-level regions. The National Immigration Administration (NIA) maintains the current 240-hour policy page. Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam joined on 20 August 2026 under the latest expansion notice.
The answer-first eligibility test
You may have a plausible case only when all six statements are true:
- Your passport nationality is on the current eligible list.
- You hold the required valid international travel document.
- You travel from country or region A through China to a different country or region C.
- You have a confirmed onward ticket with a date and seat within the allowed period.
- You enter through a designated port and remain inside its permitted area.
- Your purpose is within the short-stay scope of the policy.
If any answer is missing, the result is uncertain—not “probably eligible.”
Route logic: the rule that catches most travelers
The policy is for transit. Read the journey in immigration order, not as a return ticket:

Separate tickets can work, but they increase operational risk. You must be able to prove the onward segment and meet any baggage or check-in requirements without leaving the compliant route.
Ports and permitted areas are one test
“Shanghai participates” is not enough. You need to know the exact airport, seaport, rail terminal or land port and the geography allowed from it. The scheme is not nationwide permission simply because it operates across 24 provincial-level regions.
Before booking, list every overnight city and day trip. Match each one to the current NIA table. If the official page is ambiguous about a boundary, contact the NIA's 12367 service or the relevant border authority rather than interpreting it generously.
How to think about the 240-hour clock
Use the official calculation for your arrival port; do not count “ten hotel nights” and assume the result is the same. The safest itinerary departs comfortably before the limit.
Build margin for:
- immigration processing on arrival;
- station and airport transfers;
- weather and transport disruption;
- rebooking a canceled service;
- reaching the departure port early.
The final night should normally be in or near the departure city. A remote day trip on the final day is an unnecessary risk.
What to show at check-in and arrival
Keep a small document pack:
- passport used for every booking;
- incoming ticket or boarding pass;
- confirmed onward ticket showing destination, date and seat;
- hotel confirmations and first address;
- a one-page itinerary listing each city;
- supporting material for the visit purpose if relevant.
Save it offline. An airline may review eligibility before boarding, while Chinese immigration makes the admission decision at the port.
Four real-world planning scenarios
A five-night Shanghai visit between Europe and Japan
The third-country pattern is clear. The traveler still verifies nationality, the Shanghai port, every Yangtze Delta stop and the departure deadline. A side trip to Suzhou may fit only if the permitted-area rule supports it.
Beijing with an onward flight to Seoul

Guangzhou followed by Hong Kong
Hong Kong can form the third region, but the traveler must use designated ports and keep the Mainland itinerary within the permitted area. A domestic detour to a city outside that boundary can break an otherwise good route.
Chengdu plus Xi'an on one transit stay
Do not assume two participating cities can automatically be linked. Permitted areas are tied to the published framework. Verify the combined route before buying nonrefundable tickets.
Activities the policy does not quietly authorize
Visa-free transit does not create permission for employment, long-term study, journalism or other activities requiring prior approval. A business meeting or tourism visit may fall within the short-stay scope, but the stated purpose and actual activity should match.
Common failure points
- A same-country return disguised by separate bookings
- An onward reservation without a confirmed seat
- Arrival at a non-designated crossing
- A day trip beyond the permitted boundary
- Passport details that differ across reservations
- A departure scheduled at the final possible hour
- Reliance on an airline, agent or blog as a guarantee of admission
Transit versus other entry options
If your nationality has a unilateral or mutual visa exemption, that may be simpler because it may not require the A → China → C pattern.
