Chengdu to Leshan Giant Buddha: A Practical Day Trip Guide
Take the train to Leshan Station, choose boat or walking route deliberately and protect the return train instead of adding Emei.
Take a morning train to Leshan Station (乐山站), then use the official taxi rank or public bus toward 乐山大佛景区. Choose the walking ticket if you want temples, the cliff route and the foot platform; choose the boat if you mainly want the complete front view and need fewer stairs. They are separate experiences and tickets. Do both only if queues, water and weather cooperate.
Walking gives the fuller visit but includes steep, narrow steps and can develop a long queue at the cliff path. The boat gives the famous full-body view from the river but does not place you at the statue’s feet, and service can stop because of water level, fog or wind. Neither is objectively superior; mobility and the day’s operating conditions decide.
Leshan Station is not beside the Buddha. Count the station transfer in both directions and keep the Chinese destination ready. A late return train may look efficient, but the last workable service turns one delayed boat into an expensive overnight.
Quick Decision
| Best for | A focused Chengdu day trip |
| Time needed | 10–13 hours door to door |
| Booking pressure | High on weekends/holidays |
| Main risk | Boat suspension or stair queues causing a missed train |
| Recommended choice | Walking route; add boat only with time |

The 2026 summer schedule lists mountain access 07:30–18:30 and daytime boats 07:30–18:00; the walking ticket is ¥80 and boat ticketing is separate. Boats can pause for water level and weather. From June 2026, Leshan Station uses a revised ground/underground taxi, ride-hailing and bus layout—follow signs rather than meeting a driver at an improvised curb.
Book a return train with margin. Leave the scenic area about two hours before departure in ordinary conditions. Leshan plus Emei in one day is not a good default: both deserve real walking time, and one queue breaks the chain.
China Travel Pulse’s judgement: one day for Leshan, a separate day or overnight for Emei.
