The winning booking is the one with a workable location, clear cancellation terms, a payment method you can use, and a front desk ready to register your passport at your arrival time.

China does not require hotels to hold a special "foreign guest qualification." Government guidance says accommodation operators and platforms should not restrict overseas travelers on that basis. Even so, an inexperienced property or an unstaffed late-night arrival can still create a real check-in problem. Verify the operating details before paying for a non-refundable room.

Best booking site by traveler need

There is no permanent cheapest platform. Rates, inventory, promotions, and cancellation rules can differ by account, date, currency, and device. Compare the final checkout total for the same room and same cancellation conditions.

Trip.com: the most practical first search

Trip.com Hotels is a useful starting point because it has an English booking flow, China destination inventory, international-facing support, and both web and app access. The State Council's official guide for foreign visitors also identifies Trip.com as an online booking option that can accept international bank-card payment.

Use it to build a shortlist, not to skip verification. Check:

• the property's complete Chinese and English names;
• the map pin against a separate map service;
• the nearest useful metro entrance or station;
• the final price after taxes and fees;
• whether payment is charged now or collected by the property;
• the precise local-time cancellation deadline;
• front-desk hours and late-arrival instructions;
• whether every traveler can be registered with the passport or travel document they will carry.

Trip.com's site advertises 24-hour customer support. Save the booking reference and support route offline so you can reach it even when mobile data is unreliable.

Agoda and Booking.com: strong comparison checks

Agoda is worth checking for major-city hotels, resorts, and international or regional chains. Booking.com is familiar to many travelers and can also be useful for chain inventory and refundable bookings.

Do not compare two cards that merely share a hotel name. Confirm that the room type, bed, occupancy, breakfast, taxes, payment timing, and refund window match. A lower non-refundable price is not a saving if your rail tickets or route are still unsettled.

Inventory can be thinner on an international platform in a smaller Chinese city. If results look implausibly limited, compare another platform before concluding that the city has no suitable accommodation.

Booking directly with the hotel

Direct booking is often strongest when you already know the brand. It can provide:

• loyalty credit or member benefits;
• clearer communication with the property;
• more control over room requests;
• a direct record of a late arrival;
• flexible change handling, depending on the rate.

Compare the complete package. A direct rate that includes breakfast, lounge access, or flexible cancellation may be better than a lower prepaid platform rate. Conversely, a booking platform's multilingual support may be more valuable when the property cannot communicate with you directly.

Chinese booking apps: useful, but not the default for everyone

Ctrip (携程), Meituan (美团), Qunar (去哪儿), and Fliggy (飞猪) can reveal local inventory and same-day options that are less visible on international sites. They are most useful when you read Chinese, can complete any required identity checks, have a working local payment setup, and are comfortable handling support and refunds in Chinese.

A rate visible in an app may depend on membership, a promotion, a domestic payment method, or account verification. Continue to the final payment screen before treating it as comparable.

Can a China hotel refuse a foreign passport?

In 2024, China's Ministry of Commerce and six other departments issued measures to make accommodation easier for overseas visitors. The official circular says local authorities and platforms should not use qualification requirements to restrict accommodation operators from receiving overseas guests. The State Council's English summary likewise says platforms and operators must not illegally advertise that they do not accept foreign guests.

That policy does not guarantee a frictionless arrival. A front desk may be unfamiliar with passport entry, the reception may close before you arrive, or a self-check-in property may have no workable identity-verification route for your document.

Instead of asking only, "Do you accept foreigners?", ask:

I will check in with a foreign passport. Will your staffed front desk register my passport at [arrival time], and is there anything you need before arrival?

Save the answer. It tests the actual workflow rather than repeating an outdated qualification label.

The five checks that prevent most booking mistakes

1. Verify the exact location

"City center" is not a useful distance in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu, or Guangzhou. Check the door-to-door journey to the railway station, airport, or attraction that matters most. A hotel 400 meters from the correct metro entrance can be more convenient than a more central-looking pin two kilometers away.

The deadline is normally expressed in the property's local time. Mark it in your calendar. Keep the uncertain nights refundable when your route depends on rail tickets, attraction reservations, or weather.

4. Confirm arrival and registration

Save the confirmation, property phone number, Chinese address, platform support route, and one nearby fallback hotel. Keep the information available offline.

Check-in, deposits, and common surprises

Chinese hotels normally verify identity at check-in and register guests. A passport check can take longer than a domestic ID scan, particularly at a property that sees fewer international visitors.

A refundable incidentals deposit is common. The amount and payment method vary, and a card hold can remain for several days after checkout. Ask before arrival if the available balance matters.

Other details worth checking:

• whether reception is staffed 24 hours;
• whether the room is on a smoking or non-smoking floor;
• whether breakfast is included and when it is served;
• whether the bathroom arrangement is private or shared;
• whether the property is inside a controlled scenic area;
• whether taxis can reach the entrance;
• whether children need to be added to the booking and registered separately.

If the front desk cannot complete check-in

1. Show the confirmed reservation and the property's written reply about passport check-in.
2. Ask for a supervisor and explain that every guest's passport must be registered.
3. Contact the booking platform while you remain at the property.
