There is no single “best area” in a large Chinese city. Choose by the places you will actually visit, the exact transport connections, and the time you arrive—not by a generic city-center label.

Use a four-part test
For each hotel candidate, check:
- Daily route: How many of your priority sights or meetings can you reach directly?
- Exact station: What is the walking distance to the correct metro entrance, railway station, or airport line?
- Arrival conditions: Will reception be open, and can you reach it after the last train?
- Street context: Are food, pharmacies, and a well-lit return route available nearby?
Map straight-line distance can be misleading because station exits, compounds, rivers, expressways, and security entrances change the real walk.
Beijing
The historic core is practical for major central sights; eastern districts can suit business and nightlife; areas near the relevant railway station reduce risk for an early train. Beijing is geographically large, so staying “central” does not make every attraction close. Check the correct station name and the metro route you will use most often.
Shanghai
Central districts provide dense metro access and convenient dining, while Pudong may be better for some business and airport-side plans. Hongqiao is useful for the integrated rail-and-air hub but is not the same as staying near the Bund or central shopping areas. Verify whether a listing means Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai South, or another terminal.
Guangzhou and Shenzhen
Choose the side of the city that matches the railway station, exhibition venue, business district, or border crossing in your itinerary. A short-looking cross-city trip can become long during peak traffic. For Hong Kong connections, confirm the precise mainland and Hong Kong terminals as well as immigration time.
Chengdu, Xi'an, and other major destinations
A central metro interchange can be more useful than being beside one attraction. For day trips, proximity to the correct departure station may matter more. Compare the evening neighborhood with the early-morning transport plan before booking.
Can a hotel accept foreign guests?
Chinese government guidance issued in 2024 says platforms and accommodation operators should not restrict foreign guests based on a supposed special reception “qualification,” and should not advertise that they refuse foreigners. In practice, execution or staff familiarity can vary.
Enter the guest's passport details accurately, keep written booking confirmation, and message the property before arrival if check-in is late or the booking has unusual document needs. The hotel normally handles temporary accommodation registration.
When not to optimize for sightseeing
Stay near the airport or departure station when a missed early connection would be costly. Stay near a hospital or accessible route when health needs dominate. Stay in a quieter residential area only after checking late-night transport and language support.
Hotel availability, neighborhood construction, and transport operations change. Recheck the exact property and route for the actual travel dates.
