Booking Hotels in China as a Foreigner

Foreign travelers should not be told that they may stay only in hotels with a special blanket qualification to receive foreign guests. A 2024 central-government circular said local authorities and booking platforms should not restrict accommodation operators from receiving foreign guests on that basis, and operators should not advertise illegally that they refuse foreign guests.

That policy principle does not eliminate practical booking problems. A property may still have incomplete staff training, outdated platform information, late-night reception limits, or difficulty recording a particular travel document. The practical response is to verify the booking details without repeating the outdated claim that foreigners must choose a special class of hotel.

What the hotel does at check-in

Hotels handle accommodation registration for their guests. Bring the same valid passport or international travel document used for the booking. The front desk may need to inspect the document, confirm the room occupants, and record entry or visa information.

If you stay somewhere other than a hotel—such as a private home or some apartment arrangements—the State Council guide says residence registration should normally be completed with the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. Local online registration options also exist in some places, but availability and document support vary.

How to book with fewer problems

1. Enter your name exactly as shown in your passport. Do not swap the surname and given-name fields unless the platform specifically instructs you to do so.
2. List every guest who will occupy the room.
3. Check that the property has a staffed reception desk during your arrival window.
4. If arriving late, message the property and ask it to keep the reservation.
5. Ask a neutral operational question: “Can your front desk register a guest using a foreign passport?”
6. Keep the written confirmation and booking number offline.

Avoid treating one platform filter as a statement of national law. A platform label can be useful operational information, but it may be incomplete or outdated.

International chain or local hotel?

An international brand may offer more consistent English-language processes and loyalty benefits, but it is not automatically the best location or value. Local hotels can be excellent and may provide better access to neighborhoods, transport, and regional styles. Compare the property itself:

• recent reviews from travelers using foreign passports;
• 24-hour reception or your confirmed check-in time;
• exact address and distance from the correct station exit;
• cancellation and deposit terms;
• breakfast and room-occupancy rules;
• whether the property is a hotel, serviced apartment, guesthouse, or private rental.

If the front desk refuses check-in

Stay calm and show the written booking confirmation. Ask the staff to check with a supervisor or contact the booking platform. Explain that the issue is registration of your passport, not a request to skip registration.

If the property still cannot complete check-in, prioritize getting safe accommodation. Ask the platform to relocate or refund you and keep screenshots, receipts, and the staff's explanation. For a public-service complaint, 12345 may be available locally. A commercial dispute or poor execution at one property should not be presented as a nationwide rule.

Registration at private accommodation

Before booking a private apartment or staying with friends, ask who will help with accommodation registration and which documents are required. Keep the host's address and contact details. Do not assume that a booking-platform confirmation automatically completes the legal registration step.
