Best Map Apps for China

No single map app is best for every visitor. Choose by task: finding Chinese place names, planning metro and bus routes, walking, driving, saving locations, and sharing a destination with a driver. App language, account requirements, offline functions, and international availability change frequently.

Amap (Gaode)

Amap is widely used for local search, walking, public transport, driving, and ride-hailing integrations. English support has improved in some versions, but not every place listing or interface element is translated. Search results are strongest when you have the Chinese name or address.

Baidu Maps

Baidu Maps has deep local place and transport data. It can be useful when another app cannot find a small business or entrance. The main obstacle for many visitors is Chinese-language operation. Photo translation and saved Chinese search terms make it more usable.

Apple Maps

Apple Maps can offer a more familiar interface to iPhone users and may provide locally sourced mapping while the device is in Mainland China. Check the exact route and place entrance; do not assume that a familiar English label identifies the correct branch.

Google Maps and other overseas maps

Network access and local data behavior should be considered separately. A map may open but still have incomplete place data, transport information, or coordinate alignment for Mainland China. Do not make Google Maps your only offline navigation source.

A reliable two-map workflow

1. Save the destination's English and Chinese names.
2. Save its Chinese address and phone number.
3. Pin the location in one locally strong map.
4. Cross-check the entrance or station exit in a second source.
5. Screenshot the final approach for use without data.

Hotels, attractions, railway stations, and airports may have several entrances. The pin at the center of a large complex may be a poor taxi destination.

Public transport

Check that the app's city is correct before generating a QR code or route. Metro station names can be similar, and the fastest route can change when a station entrance is closed. Use official operator notices for service disruptions and last-train times.

Offline and privacy considerations

Download required language resources and any supported offline data before travel. Review app permissions and use official app-store listings. Do not install an unofficial modified package to obtain an English interface.
