Beijing Railway Stations Explained: South, West, Chaoyang, Fengtai and Beijing
Match the exact Chinese station on the ticket to its metro, airport route, arrival buffer and taxi entrance.
The station printed on your ticket is not a neighbourhood suggestion; it is the train you must board. 北京南站 (Beijing South) is the default for Shanghai, Tianjin, Nanjing and much of the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed corridor. 北京西站 (Beijing West) is common for Xi’an and trains on the Beijing–Guangzhou axis. 北京朝阳站 (Beijing Chaoyang) handles many northeast services, including Chengde and Harbin directions. 北京丰台站 (Beijing Fengtai) carries a mix of high-speed and conventional services. 北京站 (Beijing Railway Station) remains important for conventional and overnight routes.
Those are patterns, not guarantees. Trains to the same city can use different terminals, especially after timetable changes. Search and buy by exact station in Railway 12306, then copy the Chinese station name into your map. Arrive 60 minutes early for a first high-speed trip, 75–90 during major holidays or with passport assistance, children or bulky luggage. The platform gate normally closes before departure; “I reached the building” is not the same as being ready to board.

For Datong, departures can vary across Beijing North/Qinghe and other terminals, which is why this article does not publish a permanent city-to-station promise.
Airport connections
From PEK, use the Airport Express then metro for central terminals, or an official airport bus/taxi when luggage or late hours make changes awkward. From PKX, the Daxing Express to Caoqiao is naturally placed for Beijing South and Fengtai. Beijing Chaoyang now has direct metro access on Line 3; old guides describing it as a taxi-only station are obsolete.
Taxi mistakes
Show the full Chinese name. “Beijing station” can be heard as 北京站 even when you mean 北京西站. For drop-off, tell the driver the entrance shown in 12306 or the station map; large terminals have separated departure decks and ride-hailing zones. After arrival, follow official signs to the taxi queue or app pickup zone instead of accepting a driver inside the concourse.
China Travel Pulse’s judgement: pay slightly more for a sensible departure time and station before buying the cheapest train. A 07:00 departure from the wrong side of Beijing can erase the saving in taxi cost and sleep.
