3 Days in Chengdu: Pandas, Food and a Realistic First-Time Itinerary

Three days in Chengdu should not be three days of commuting to attractions. Give the city one slow day, the Panda Base one early morning and the third day to either Leshan, Dujiangyan or more Chengdu. The point is not “pandas, Chunxi Road, hotpot” in one breath; it is leaving room for tea, neighbourhoods and a meal that does not happen between ticket gates.

Count only full days. Tianfu International Airport is far southeast of the centre, and a late arrival does not leave a usable evening after baggage and the rail or road transfer. The Panda Base is a morning because animal activity and outdoor viewing decline in heat, not because an itinerary template says so. Leshan is a day trip because station transfers, scenic queues and the return train require margin.

If food is a major reason for coming, keep the third day in Chengdu. A market, a teahouse and two deliberately chosen meals will tell you more about the city than a second excursion.

Quick Decision

Day 1: People’s Park and a teahouse → Kuanzhai side streets or Wenshu area → dinner chosen by neighbourhood, not fame. Day 2: Panda Base at opening → rest → eastern/central evening. Day 3: Leshan, Dujiangyan, or a second city day.

Add a fourth night if travelling with children, if food is a purpose rather than an evening activity, or before the long Jiuzhaigou transfer.
