Xi’an City Wall: Tickets, Gates, Cycling and the Best Time to Visit
Use South Gate by default and choose a 30-minute viewpoint, two-hour sunset cycle or full walking circuit with an exit plan.
Use Yongning Gate, the South Gate (永宁门), on a first visit. It has the clearest arrival, the strongest evening atmosphere and easy access from the Bell Tower. The official full ticket is ¥54. A full circuit is about 14 km: allow 1.5–2 hours by bicycle with stops and 3.5–5 hours on foot. Sunset is the best default, but start early enough that bicycle rental and your chosen exit are still operating.
The wall is not a continuous museum corridor with identical services. Entry points, bicycle counters and closing times can differ, and events can restrict the South Gate area. Decide whether your goal is the ceremonial gate, a sunset view or completing the circuit. Most visitors want the first two and do not need the third.
Carry water and a layer: there is little shelter from summer sun, winter wind or sudden rain. If cycling, verify the return location and closing time before leaving the counter. A tired rider on slick stone should turn back early, not finish for the sake of a lap.

30 minutes: enter South Gate, walk one short section, return. Two hours: rent a bicycle if available and complete or partly complete the circuit; inspect brakes and photograph the return rules. Full circuit: walk with water, shade and an exit plan.
The wall is exposed. In summer, sunset avoids the worst heat; in rain, stone surfaces and bicycle braking are the problem. Children need an appropriately sized bicycle/seat under the operator’s current rules. Older travellers can enjoy the South Gate platform without committing to the circuit.
