Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Entry

Hainan's visa-free policy can be one of the simplest ways for an eligible traveler to enjoy a longer China holiday—provided the entire China stay remains inside Hainan. It is a regional permission, not a doorway to the rest of Mainland China.
The official NIA Hainan page lists 61 eligible countries as of 20 August 2026. The NIA announcement added Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam. Hainan's official provincial portal is the reference for local notices and services.

Work, long-term study and journalism are outside the short-stay permission and require the appropriate visa.

All five need evidence. A resort confirmation alone is not an entry basis.
The Hainan-only boundary
The easiest way to avoid confusion is to mark Mainland domestic segments in red before booking.
- Haikou → Sanya is travel within Hainan.
- Sanya → Shanghai is travel beyond the policy area.
- An international itinerary that first enters China in Guangzhou may cross the Mainland border before Hainan and therefore needs a separate basis.
If you want Hainan plus another Chinese region, check a nationwide visa exemption, a carefully structured transit policy or an appropriate visa. Do not plan to “sort it out” after arrival.
Route examples
Seven nights: one southern base
Stay around Sanya, mix beach time with one or two day trips and keep the final day flexible. This is the lowest-friction version for a first visit.
Ten nights: Haikou and Sanya
Begin with urban food, old streets and northern-island sights, then move south once for the coast. Leave the final night near the international departure point.
Three weeks: a slow island circuit
Use two or three bases and add central or eastern areas. Check driving rules, local transport and tropical-weather disruption before committing to a tight loop.
Arrival preparation
Carry:
- the passport used for booking;
- international arrival and departure confirmations;
- Hainan accommodation details;
- a simple island itinerary;
- supporting information for business, family or medical purposes if relevant;
- offline copies of the official policy and key addresses.
At the airline counter, explain that the whole China stay is in Hainan under the regional 30-day policy. At the port, answer questions consistently and follow the immigration officer's directions.
Accommodation and registration
Hotels normally handle temporary accommodation registration for guests. If you stay in a private home or another arrangement, ask the local public security authority about the required registration process and timing. Keep the address and host contact available.
Payments, transport and weather
Set up at least two payment methods and carry a modest cash backup. Save hotel names and destinations in Chinese. Hainan's tropical weather can disrupt flights and outdoor activities, especially during storm periods, so build an extra night before a critical connection.
For a 30-day stay, avoid paying every hotel in advance. A mix of flexible bookings allows the route to respond to weather without crossing the regional boundary.

Common questions
Can I take a train or flight to Guangzhou for one day?
Not under the Hainan permission alone. Crossing into Mainland China requires another lawful basis.
Can I stay for exactly 30 hotel nights?
Use the official entry and stay-counting method, not hotel-night arithmetic. Schedule departure with margin.
Do I need a travel agency?
The current policy should be read from the official NIA conditions. Airline procedures or package arrangements can vary, so confirm operational requirements for your route without treating an agent as the authority.
Can I work remotely during the stay?
Do not infer work permission from tourism entry. If the activity is employment or otherwise regulated, obtain official advice on the correct authorization.

If the trip changes after arrival
Do not buy a last-minute Mainland ticket first and ask questions later. Contact the immigration authority and airline, explain the current admission basis and ask what authorization is required. A weather diversion, medical need or family change can be genuine without automatically creating permission to cross the regional boundary.
