China Visa-Free Entry Update: What Changed in August 2026

China added Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam to the 240-hour transit and Hainan 30-day schemes on 20 August 2026. This practical update separates the two options and shows travelers what still needs to be proved.

China made one focused but important entry-policy change on 20 August 2026: ordinary-passport holders from Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam were added to both the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme and Hainan's 30-day regional visa-free scheme. The two schemes now cover 57 and 61 countries respectively.

That does not mean every Kyrgyz or Vietnamese traveler can enter every part of China without a visa. Your route, purpose, entry port and planned destinations still decide which rule—if any—fits.

The August change at a glance

Option What changed Maximum stay The condition most often missed
240-hour visa-free transit Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam added; 57 eligible countries in total 240 hours You must continue to a third country or region on a confirmed ticket
Hainan regional visa-free entry Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam added; 61 eligible countries in total 30 days You must remain within Hainan

The National Immigration Administration (NIA) published the 20 August announcement and updated its 240-hour transit guidance and Hainan guidance.

Option 1: 240-hour visa-free transit

This is a transit policy, not a general ten-day visa waiver. A route must show movement from one country or region, through an eligible Chinese port and permitted stay area, to a different country or region.

  • Seoul → Shanghai → Hanoi may fit the route pattern.
  • Hanoi → Guangzhou → Bangkok may fit the route pattern.
  • Hanoi → Guangzhou → Hanoi does not create a third-country transit.

Nationality is only the first test. You also need an ordinary passport valid for the trip, a confirmed onward ticket with a date and seat, an approved arrival port, a lawful purpose and a plan that stays inside the permitted area. Read the full 240-hour transit guide or use the booking checklist before paying for a complicated itinerary.

Option 2: Hainan's 30-day regional policy

Hainan's policy can suit a holiday centered on Haikou, Sanya and the rest of the island. Eligible visitors may enter through an open Hainan port for tourism, business, visits, family visits, medical treatment, exhibitions or sports activities and stay for up to 30 days.

The boundary matters: this permission is for Hainan only. A plan such as Singapore → Sanya → Singapore can be consistent with a Hainan-only holiday, but Sanya → Shanghai is not covered by the Hainan permission. If you want to add Mainland cities, identify a separate lawful entry basis before booking. Our Hainan guide explains the boundary in detail.

What did not change

The announcement did not remove border inspection, create permission to work or study, or replace China's other visa and visa-free policies. It also did not turn the 240-hour policy into a round-trip exemption.

If your purpose is employment, long-term study, journalism or another activity outside the published scope, check the correct visa route with an official Chinese embassy or consulate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains the official mission network.

A five-minute booking check

Before you commit to flights or hotels, write down:

  1. The nationality and type of passport you will present.
  2. Your exact place of departure before China.
  3. Your first destination after China.
  4. The Chinese arrival and departure ports.
  5. Every province or municipality you intend to visit.
  6. Your purpose and confirmed onward departure time.

Then match those facts to one policy. Do not combine the 240-hour clock with the 30-day Hainan allowance or assume that qualifying for one automatically qualifies you for the other.

Common questions

Can I decide which option to use at the airport?

Border authorities make the admission decision, but you should design and document a compliant route before departure. Airlines may also check documents at the first airport.

Is Hong Kong or Macao a third region for transit routing?

They can function as separate regions in an international transit sequence, but every flight or rail segment, port and permitted-area condition still has to work. Verify the exact itinerary rather than relying on a city pair alone.

Does a ten-day hotel booking prove eligibility?

No. Accommodation is useful evidence, but it does not replace the passport, route, port, area, purpose and onward-ticket tests.

Bottom line

The August expansion gives Kyrgyz and Vietnamese ordinary-passport holders two additional ways to plan short China visits. The 240-hour option is built around transit; the Hainan option is built around a regional stay. Choose the policy first, then build the route around its conditions.

Recheck 72 hours before departure

Open the official notice again, confirm that no ticket segment has changed and compare the airport code with the designated-port list. Check that the onward reservation still shows a confirmed seat and that every hotel lies inside the permitted area. Save the evidence offline and carry a simple paper itinerary. If a cancellation changes A → China → C into a return to A, reassess the entry basis before accepting the new flight.

Travelers comparing this change with other exemptions can use Do you need a visa for China?. It prevents a common mistake: choosing transit when a simpler nationwide exemption applies, or choosing Hainan when the real trip continues to Mainland China.
