China Travel Costs: Build a Realistic Budget

A single “daily cost for China” is rarely reliable. City, season, booking date, comfort level, domestic distance, attraction mix, and payment fees can change the result dramatically. Build a dated budget from items you can verify.

A single “daily cost for China” is rarely reliable. City, season, booking date, comfort level, domestic distance, attraction mix, and payment fees can change the result dramatically. Build a dated budget from items you can verify.

The five budget buckets

Accommodation

Price the exact neighborhood and dates. Compare the final total, taxes or service charges, cancellation terms, breakfast, room occupancy, and check-in conditions. Holiday and event demand can be more important than the hotel's usual category.

Intercity transport

Query official 12306 rail inventory and operating airlines for the intended day. Include station or airport transfers, baggage, seat choice, and change flexibility. A cheap flight far from the city can cost more door to door than a train.

Local transport

Estimate metro trips, airport transfers, late-night taxis, and ride-hailing. Do not multiply one city's fare across the whole country. Keep a buffer for a missed last train or a wrong-station correction.

Food and activities

Create separate allowances for ordinary meals, special dining, attraction tickets, guides, performances, and day trips. Use current official attraction pages where reservation or ticket fees matter.

Connectivity, insurance, and contingency

Include roaming or SIM/eSIM service, travel insurance, laundry, baggage storage, medicine, payment or ATM charges, and an emergency reserve. The reserve should be accessible through more than one payment method.

Payment affects the usable budget

China's State Council payment guide describes cash, bank cards, mobile payment, and cash withdrawal for overseas visitors. Alipay and WeChat Pay can support eligible foreign cards, but verification, card support, limits, and fees can change.

Carry renminbi cash plus at least one physical card. Ask your bank about foreign transaction and ATM charges. Never assume one phone wallet will work for every merchant or transit gate.

Make three totals

  1. Committed: transport, accommodation, visas where applicable, and prepaid reservations.
  2. Daily variable: food, local transport, entries, and shopping.
  3. Contingency: disruption, medical excess, rebooking, and an unexpected extra night.

Record the currency and quote date beside every large item. Convert using a realistic card or cash rate, not just a search-engine mid-market number.

Avoid false precision

An old article may list exact daily totals that no longer match your route. Instead, price a representative low, expected, and high day. Update the worksheet after major bookings and shortly before departure.

Travel insurance should match the itinerary and possible emergency costs. Official travel advice recommends adequate cover; it does not guarantee that a particular product or claim will apply.
