Li River Cruise or Bamboo Raft: How to Choose

Choose the full Li River cruise for a one-way Guilin-to-Yangshuo journey, a Yulong River raft for a quieter short activity, or Xingping for flexible riverside views. Check the exact pier, route and operating notice before paying.

The simplest decision is this: take the full Li River cruise when you want a comfortable, one-way journey from the Guilin area to Yangshuo. Choose a Yulong River bamboo raft when you are already staying near Yangshuo and want a shorter, quieter countryside activity. Go to Xingping when you want flexible riverbank views without committing to a boat trip.

Do not buy a product based only on the words “Li River cruise” or “bamboo raft.” Similar names can refer to different rivers, piers, route lengths and transport arrangements. Confirm the exact Chinese pier name, start and end points, operating notice and total price before paying.

Quick comparison

Option Best for Main trade-off What to verify
Full Li River cruise Travelling from Guilin toward Yangshuo with a reserved seat Uses most of the day once pier transfers are included Departure pier, boat class, check-in time, arrival pier and luggage arrangements
Yulong River bamboo raft A shorter and quieter activity while based near Yangshuo It is a separate river and does not transfer you from Guilin Exact route, departure pier, passenger restrictions and return transport
Xingping riverbank visit Flexible views, walking and photography You see the river from land rather than completing a cruise Transport back, walking conditions and daylight

Choose the full Li River cruise for a Guilin-to-Yangshuo travel day

The official Li River scenic-area information describes the core cruise as a one-way trip from the Mopanshan or Zhujiang pier area to Yangshuo. The published route is roughly 60 kilometres and usually takes around four hours on the water. The piers are outside central Guilin, so hotel-to-pier transport and check-in time must be included in the day.

This is the clearest choice when you:

  • plan to leave Guilin and sleep in Yangshuo that night;
  • prefer an assigned indoor seat with access to an outside viewing area;
  • are travelling with someone who would find a small open raft uncomfortable;
  • want one continuous view of the Li River rather than arranging several shorter transfers.

The cruise should not be treated like a city-centre ferry. Confirm which pier your boat uses, how you will reach it, where the boat ends in Yangshuo and whether your luggage can travel with you. The official scenic-area site publishes current transport guidance, ticket information and temporary operating notices.

Choose a Yulong River raft for a quieter Yangshuo activity

The Yulong River is a separate countryside river near Yangshuo. Its bamboo-raft experiences are sold as local activities with multiple possible piers and route combinations. Guangxi's culture and tourism authority describes several Yulong River rafting products, which is precisely why the route name matters: “Yulong bamboo raft” is not one single fixed journey.

Choose this option when you:

  • are already based in or near Yangshuo;
  • want a shorter activity that can be combined with cycling or a countryside day;
  • prefer a smaller-scale river experience to a large cruise boat;
  • do not need the boat to move you from Guilin to Yangshuo.

Ask the seller to show the start and finish on a map. Confirm how you will reach the departure pier and get back from the arrival point. Passenger age, height, mobility and weather restrictions may differ by route, so check the operating rules for your exact trip rather than relying on an old screenshot or blog price.

Choose Xingping for flexible river views from land

The Xingping section contains well-known Li River scenery, including the landscape associated with the RMB 20 banknote. A land visit gives you more control over timing and avoids committing the day to a cruise, but it is not a substitute for the through journey if your priority is seeing the river continuously from the water.

This option works well when you:

  • want to combine the old town and riverbank in one visit;
  • prefer walking and photography to a scheduled boat activity;
  • need a weather-resistant alternative to an open raft;
  • are comfortable arranging road transport to and from Xingping.

Save the Chinese name 兴坪古镇 and your return transport details before leaving Yangshuo. Do not assume the last bus or car availability from an old travel post is still current.

Booking checklist

Before paying for any river product, record:

  1. the exact river and route;
  2. the departure and arrival pier names in Chinese;
  3. the check-in deadline and expected finish time;
  4. what is included in the quoted price;
  5. whether transport to or from the pier is included;
  6. the cancellation process if weather or river conditions stop operations;
  7. passenger, mobility and luggage restrictions;
  8. the official booking confirmation or licensed seller receipt.

The official Li River scenic-area notice says core cruise tickets are released through official channels and can have a defined advance-sale window. Treat schedules, prices and availability as live information: check the latest official notice for your dates.

If weather disrupts the plan

River operations can change because of water level, weather or navigation controls. Avoid building a non-refundable connection immediately after the advertised finish time. Keep a land-based Yangshuo or Xingping plan available and verify the operating notice again on the morning of travel.

If a seller substitutes a different route, pier or boat type, decide from the new itinerary rather than assuming it offers the same experience. The general warning signs in our tourist scams guide also apply to vaguely described river products.

Official sources

Operating routes, restrictions, prices and sailing conditions can change. Confirm them with the scenic area's current official channel for your travel date.
