China Tourist Visa Application Guide

An L visa is intended for tourism. Apply through the official Chinese consular or visa-service channel responsible for the place where you legally reside or are permitted to apply. There is no safe worldwide promise for the fee, processing time, appointment, fingerprint procedure, or exact document list.

Before applying, check whether a current visa-free arrangement lawfully covers your passport, purpose, dates, and stay. If it does not, use the correct visa route rather than trying to reshape the itinerary around an exemption you do not meet.

Start with the responsible official office

Use the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs online visa system or the website of the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your application location. The system may direct you to an authorized Chinese Visa Application Service Center.

Ignore agents who guarantee approval, invent an “inside connection,” or ask you to misstate your purpose. A service provider can help organize a file but cannot promise issuance.

Core L-visa materials

MFA guidance updated in May 2026 says applicants should follow the local mission's requirements for the online form and provide the passport, photograph, evidence of lawful stay or residence where applicable, previous Chinese passport or visa where applicable, plus either:

• itinerary materials such as round-trip flight and hotel bookings; or
• an invitation from a unit or individual in China containing the required applicant, itinerary, and inviter details.

Consular officers may request other materials based on the case. The local official checklist controls.

Application sequence

1. Select the correct application city and official channel.
2. Read the current L-visa checklist before making non-refundable bookings.
3. Complete the form consistently with the passport.
4. Upload or prepare the required photograph.
5. Assemble itinerary or invitation evidence.
6. Complete any appointment, document submission, biometric, interview, or payment step required locally.
7. Keep the receipt and use the official tracking channel.
8. When the passport is returned, check every visa detail immediately.

Check the issued visa

Review the name, passport number, visa category, number of entries, “enter before” date, and duration of each stay. If anything appears wrong, contact the issuing office before travel.

A visa does not guarantee entry. Carry supporting information and answer inspection questions truthfully.

Fees and processing time

These can vary by nationality, reciprocity, application location, service center, urgency, and optional services. Quote the amount and expected time only from the official page for the exact office, and note the date checked. Do not use a global price from a travel blog.

Avoid buying inflexible travel solely on an estimated processing time. Public holidays, requests for more documents, interviews, and courier delivery can extend the timeline.

Frequent problems

• Surname and given names entered inconsistently.
• Passport validity or blank pages below local requirements.
• Applying in a place where lawful residence evidence is missing.
• Hotel and flight dates that conflict with the form.
• An invitation missing contact, itinerary, or signature information.
• Assuming a previous Chinese visa guarantees a new one.
• Applying for tourism when the true purpose is work, study, or journalism.

After arrival

Respect the visa's permitted stay and purpose. Hotels handle accommodation registration; travelers staying elsewhere normally need to arrange the applicable residence registration. Contact the local exit-entry administration before the permitted stay expires if a legitimate extension issue arises; approval is not automatic.
