Bike Sharing in China for Foreign Tourists

Shared bikes can be one of the easiest ways to cover a short distance, but registration, phone-number support, identity checks, deposits, payment, and parking controls are not identical across every city or app version. Treat any tutorial that says one method “always works” as temporary.

The two names visitors encounter most often are Meituan Bike and HelloBike. Access may appear inside a major payment or service app, a mini-program, or a separate app. The available entry point can differ by operating system, account region, city, and current product design.

Set up a payment fallback first

Chinese government guidance says overseas visitors can register Alipay or WeChat with foreign or Chinese mobile numbers and bind supported international bank cards. That does not guarantee that every bike service will accept the same account or funding source. Finish wallet verification and test a normal purchase before relying on it for transport.

Carry another way to travel—metro, bus, walking, or ride-hailing—in case the bike account cannot be activated.

A safe setup process

1. Install or open the official app or mini-program.
2. Confirm that you are selecting a pedal bicycle, not an electric bicycle or unrelated rental product.
3. Read the current phone, identity, deposit, pricing, and insurance prompts.
4. Add a supported payment method.
5. Test unlocking in a legal parking area during daylight.
6. Check that the trip starts in the app before riding.
7. End the trip only in an approved parking location and confirm that billing has stopped.

Never upload a passport image to an unofficial helper or cloned app. If the service does not support your document or phone number, use another transport method rather than entering false data.

Parking matters as much as unlocking

Cities increasingly use marked parking zones, electronic fences, and no-parking areas. A lock closing physically does not always mean the app accepts the location. Before walking away, check the end-of-trip confirmation and final charge.

Do not block tactile paving, building entrances, bus stops, fire access, narrow sidewalks, or traffic lanes. Local enforcement, relocation fees, and account penalties vary.

Road safety

• Ride on the correct side and use bicycle facilities where provided.
• Obey signals and pedestrian priority.
• Do not use a phone while moving.
• Avoid headphones that block traffic sound.
• Do not carry a passenger on a standard shared bicycle.
• Use extra caution at junctions, delivery-vehicle stops, and e-bike flows.

Rules for electric bicycles, helmets, age, and passengers are not the same as rules for pedal bikes and may vary by city. Do not assume a shared e-bike is a simple faster version of a pedal bike.

Costs and deposits

Use the live app price shown for that city and account. Do not rely on an old nationwide price table. Check time units, passes, deposits, out-of-zone fees, parking penalties, and whether a pass renews automatically.

If a charge looks wrong, save the bike number, location, start and end time, and screenshots before contacting official support.

What requires local testing

Foreign phone-number acceptance, passport verification, overseas-card funding, and the best mini-program path can change faster than government travel guides.
