How to Use WeChat in China as a Tourist
Set up WeChat without making the whole trip depend on it: registration, identity and payment checks, chat, translation, QR codes, Mini Programs, common failures and practical alternatives.
WeChat is useful in China because it is not only a messaging app. A hotel may send directions in a chat, a museum may publish notices through an Official Account, and a restaurant may put its menu or queue inside a Mini Program. You do not need to use every feature, and you should not make the whole trip depend on one account.
The menus below reflect the international WeChat app in English. Names and positions can move after an update.
Set it up before departure
Download WeChat from the official Apple App Store, Google Play listing, or the link provided by Tencent. Register with a mobile number you will keep during the trip. Use the correct country code, create a strong password, and add a recovery method if the app offers one.
The State Council guide says foreign or Chinese mobile numbers can be used for registration. Current identity and security checks vary. The Shanghai government guide says foreign users are asked to scan the passport information page for identity verification. Some new accounts may also be shown an in-app security check or asked for assistance from an existing user.
Follow only the instructions displayed inside the official app or official Help Center. Do not pay a stranger to “verify” the account, hand over an SMS code, or let someone remotely control the phone. If a QR code expires, restart the official flow rather than sharing account details in a public group.
After registration:
- Confirm that you can sign out and recover the account without guessing.
- Set the interface language under Me → Settings → General → Language.
- Allow only the permissions you need.
- Test a message and a voice or video call.
- Update the app before travel, then avoid major account changes during the trip.
A new device, new country, new SIM, or repeated failed login can trigger another security check. Keep the registered number active.
Account identity and payment identity are not the same thing
Opening a chat account, verifying a person's identity, and activating Weixin Pay are related but separate processes. A user may be able to message contacts while payment remains unavailable. A Mini Program may also apply its own identity rules.
For payment, open Me → Services or Wallet if that option is available, then follow the current prompts. The State Council guide says supported overseas cards can be linked and lists Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, and Discover. Acceptance still depends on the issuing bank, merchant, transaction type, risk checks, and current product terms.
Enter the name and passport details exactly as the app requests. If verification fails:
- check whether surname and given names are in the correct fields;
- remove accidental spaces or punctuation not present in the passport;
- make sure the card's billing details match the bank record;
- ask the issuing bank whether it blocked the verification or transaction;
- use official in-app support rather than repeatedly submitting different identities.
Do not assume a linked card can fund every WeChat feature. Person-to-person transfers, red packets, balance functions, and some Mini Program transactions may have different conditions from ordinary merchant payments. Keep Alipay, a physical bank card, and some RMB cash as alternatives.
Chatting with hotels, guides, and drivers
To add a contact, tap + → Add Contacts and search the person's WeChat ID or phone number, or use + → Scan on their personal QR code. Check the displayed name before sending booking details.
WeChat supports text, voice messages, calls, images, live location, and file sharing. For travel:
- send the hotel your arrival time and booking number;
- ask the property to send its Chinese name and map pin;
- share a driver's plate number with a companion;
- keep the important instruction in text as well as voice;
- avoid sending a passport image unless a legitimate service requires it through an appropriate channel.
A random QR code is not proof of identity. Scanning can open a person, Official Account, Mini Program, payment request, web page, or login confirmation. Read the screen before approving anything, and never confirm a desktop login you did not start yourself.
Translation that is actually useful
For a text message, press and hold it, then tap Translate. The Shanghai government guide also describes + → Scan → Translate for camera translation. These tools are good for directions, simple menus, and routine chat, but they can misread names, medication, allergies, refund terms, or a change of date.
For anything consequential:
- send short sentences rather than idioms;
- include numbers and dates in an unambiguous format;
- ask the other person to confirm;
- keep a human-checked Chinese version of medical and allergy information;
- show the original text alongside the translation.
Voice messages are harder to search later. If an instruction matters, ask for it in writing.
Official Accounts and Mini Programs
An Official Account is a publisher or service account inside WeChat. Museums, parks, hotels, airlines, and government departments use them for notices and links. A Mini Program is a lightweight service that runs inside WeChat without a separate app. It may handle tickets, restaurant queues, ride-hailing, delivery, accommodation registration, or customer service.
There are several ways to open one:
- scan the QR code on the organization's official website or at its premises;
- search the exact Chinese name in WeChat;
- open a link sent by a verified account;
- use Discover → Mini Programs to return to a recent service.
Before entering passport or card information, confirm that the service belongs to the intended organization. Start from the attraction's official website whenever possible. Similar names and copied logos are not enough.
Mini Programs are third-party services with their own rules. Some accept foreign passports and overseas cards; others support only Chinese identity documents, Chinese phone numbers, or domestic payment. An English WeChat interface does not make every Mini Program English.
Scanning for menus, tickets, and payment
WeChat's scanner can read ordinary QR codes and Mini Program codes. The result determines the next step:
- Restaurant menu: confirm the restaurant name and table number before ordering.
- Attraction ticket: enter every visitor's passport details exactly, then save the order page.
- Merchant payment: confirm the merchant and amount before entering the payment PIN.
- Personal payment code: use extra care; it may not provide the same transaction record or service protections as the merchant's checkout.
- Web link: inspect the domain and do not install an unknown app or profile.
Some payment codes rotate. Do not assume a screenshot will work later. For a ticket or reservation, keep the order number and the passport used for booking, not only the QR image.
Common failures
The SMS code never arrives
Check the country code, roaming, spam filtering, dual-SIM settings, and whether the registered line can receive international SMS. Do not request codes continuously; the service may impose a waiting period.
Registration asks for another user
Use the exact official assistance flow shown by WeChat and ask someone you actually know if help is required. Eligibility conditions for the assisting account can change. Do not buy scans online.
Services or Wallet does not appear
Check the app version, interface region and language, then use official support. Feature availability can depend on account status and current terms. Reinstalling without preserving account recovery can make the problem worse.
A foreign card links but payment fails
Try an ordinary merchant transaction rather than a transfer. Confirm that the bank permits the charge and that the merchant accepts that funding route. Use Alipay, the physical card, or cash if it still fails.
A Mini Program rejects the passport
Do not invent an identity number or use someone else's. Look for the venue's English website, offline counter, phone service, Alipay Mini Program, or an established booking platform that explicitly supports foreign passports.
The account is restricted
Use WeChat Security Center or the official Help Center shown in the app. Avoid unofficial “unblocking” services. In the meantime, contact the hotel or airline by phone or email and use standalone apps.
Do not let one super-app become one point of failure
Keep alternatives for each essential task:
- Messages: hotel phone number and email.
- Payments: Alipay, a physical international card, and RMB cash.
- Transport: standalone DiDi or a staffed taxi queue.
- Tickets: official web booking, offline counter, or an established platform.
- Translation: an offline translation app and a printed address card.
- Maps: saved Chinese place names and an offline map.
WeChat is most helpful when it shortens routine steps. It should not be the only place where you store a booking, address, emergency contact, or proof of payment.
