How to Pay in China as a Foreign Visitor
Set up a mobile wallet before departure, carry a second card and keep some renminbi cash. This guide explains QR payments, supported international cards and what to try when a payment fails.
Best setup: prepare one mobile wallet before departure, carry a second card from another issuer, and keep some renminbi cash. Mobile payment is convenient, but card verification, merchant acceptance, network access and app risk controls can still cause a transaction to fail.
Set up this payment stack
- Alipay or WeChat Pay connected to a supported international card.
- A second physical card, ideally from a different bank or network.
- RMB cash for backup and small transactions.
- Your bank's app and support number for approvals and fraud checks.
China's State Council guidance says foreign users can register supported payment apps with a foreign or Chinese mobile number. Its guide lists Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover among the card brands that may be bound to payment products. Actual support, limits and fees depend on the current product screen and service agreement.
Set up before departure
- Install the official app from your device's app store.
- Use a phone number that will continue receiving messages in China.
- Enter your name and identity details exactly as the app requests.
- Bind a card and complete the required verification.
- Make sure you can open your bank's verification app or receive its messages abroad.
- Download the payment app and bank support instructions for offline access.
Never give an account password, bank login or one-time code to someone offering to “activate” the wallet.
How QR payments work
Two flows are common:
- You scan the merchant's QR code, enter the amount and confirm.
- The merchant scans your payment code from the wallet app.
Check the merchant name and amount before authorizing. Keep the confirmation screen until the merchant confirms that the payment succeeded.
Personal transfer codes, merchant collection codes, transport services and in-app checkouts can be processed differently. A card that works for one flow may fail in another.
If a foreign card or QR payment fails
Work through this order:
- Read the exact error instead of repeatedly pressing pay.
- Confirm that the wallet's identity verification is complete.
- Check whether your phone has working data.
- Open your bank app for an approval request or fraud alert.
- Try the second card.
- Ask whether the merchant accepts a direct bank-card payment.
- Use cash if the other methods remain unavailable.
Common causes include issuer declines, unsupported transaction types, name mismatches, incomplete verification, limits, risk controls and merchant acceptance settings. Repeating the same failed payment can trigger additional security checks.
Cards and cash remain useful
Official guidance presents mobile payment, bank cards and cash as available options for overseas visitors. Direct international-card acceptance is improving, but it is not uniform at every small merchant or machine. For context on which payment changes were already in force and which were only announced, read the dated July 2026 China travel update, then follow the current product screen and official guidance.
ATMs displaying a matching card-network logo may allow cash withdrawals. The ATM operator and your issuing bank can each apply their own fee or limit. Carry useful denominations because a small merchant may not have change for a large note.
Alipay or WeChat Pay?
There is no universal winner. Choose the wallet that:
- completes verification successfully;
- supports your card;
- covers the services you actually plan to use;
- can receive any necessary verification messages.
Installing both can provide redundancy, but connecting both to the same single card does not create a true backup.
For a wider setup sequence, continue with the essential apps guide and the internet access guide.
Security checklist
- Use only official apps and support channels.
- Confirm the payee and amount.
- Do not let a merchant or helper control your phone.
- Protect payment apps with device security.
- Keep the backup card separate from your main wallet.
- Contact the bank promptly if a card or phone is lost.
This guide cannot guarantee that a specific wallet, card, merchant or transaction will be accepted.
